Bessie Smith Cultural Center Addition / Chattanooga, TN
University of Tennessee / Professor Kevin Stevens
Project Team : Michael Travis, Kaela Roberts
Honoring the heritage of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, the project carefully preserves the existing structure, weaving it seamlessly into the new design. The addition harmoniously expands upon the original building, blending old and new to create a cohesive and inviting space for the community. Embracing the transformative power of natural light, the design concept infuses the community center with an abundance of sunlight. Thoughtfully placed windows, skylights, and light wells bathe the interior spaces in warm and inviting illumination. This emphasis on natural light not only enhances the aesthetics but also promotes a sense of well-being, creating an uplifting and inclusive environment for all who enter. The community center serves as a vibrant hub where people from diverse backgrounds can come together, engage in meaningful activities, and celebrate the richness of Chattanooga's cultural tapestry. The spaces within the center are carefully designed to be versatile, accommodating a range of events, exhibitions, performances, and educational programs. From galleries and gathering areas to performance spaces and classrooms, each space is thoughtfully crafted to foster creativity, connection, and community engagement
